Vol 1. – ‘Iron Duke’ is a tribute to Arthur Wellesley, Duke Of Wellington (1769 – 1852). Here, perfumer Julie Dunkley has created a strikingly powerful fragrance with animalic depths – an apparition of the celebrated horseman, warrior politician and sartorial pioneer.
The sweet tobacco powder alludes to the striking vegetation of England and evokes a tasty gourmandise. Metal and alcohol resonate together, two acidic and tannic swords in the air. The animal notes provide a stable base for the action-packed elements of this fragrance, the steaming, salty sweat of the steeds that soak and rationalize the clamor. Saddle soap creates a layer of velvet skin that makes the Iron Duke feel firmer and less firm. The leather and gunpowder illustrate a high-speed chase; a cloud of weapon smoke reverberating against the tense drum of a skinned armor as the leather rider rushes through the bonfire and advances into battle. The hay, a soft sweetness, is like an idyllic memory, far from the battlefield. Clean but full of brutal animalism, Iron Duke is majestic, determined and polished.
