Here the earth tastes of iron and ash,
of pinewood smoke and buried rain.

Roots drink from red rock.
Leaves wither green to charcoal sighs,
cured above cremated timber,
breathing in fire before water ever finds them.

A name rises with the steam —
Lapsang Souchong —
a whisper wrapped in smoke,
an older twin
who never left home.

1841 — Himalaya.

A journey carried in quiet hands.
Mountain to mountain,
East to farther east,
across borders drawn by men
who never asked the seed its will.

The water runs fruity carmine now,
bright where its sibling runs dark.
Assam replaces the other Gemini —
bold, brisk, sun-struck.
And in the far blue hush of higher slopes,
Darjeeling stands silhouetted,
